THE VEIN PAIN (HEALTH)

Varicose veins are bulging veins that occur when the blood flow in our legs is restricted.  In a healthy pair of pins, the blood travels smoothly back to the heart as it’s blocked from travelling backwards by tiny valves in our veins.  When these valves weaken or are damaged, our blood is allowed to flow back down the vein and can pool and create the swollen, lumpy veins we are familiar with.

CHANCES OF DEVELOPING VARICOSE VEINS
Gender
  • More prevalent in ladies
  • Men too can suffer from the protruding lumps
Genetics
  • An increased risk of the condition of someone in your family is affected
  • Can develop at any given age, as a teenager or later in adult life
Weight
  • Overweight added pressure on the legs, forcing them to work even harder to maintain a healthy blood flow and causing the valves to weaken
Lifestyle
  • Spending prolong hours in the day on your feet
  • Standing for long periods of time restricts a healthy blood flow and puts pressure in the legs
Pregnancy
  • Changes the hormone levels and can cause the walls of the blood vessels to relax
  • The amount of blood that increases to support the growing aby puts an extra strain on the veins
  • Varicose veins almost always improve after birth when the hormone return to normal

Tips to ease the discomfort of existing varicose veins:
  • Take regular breaks throughout the day
  • Wear compression tights
  • Put your feet up with a cuppa to improve circulation
