Mentor-mentee relationship takes commitment from both sides

There must be the need to be a mentor, not just simply because we are assign to that role.

Should see the mentoring relationship as a development opportunity and an avenue to achieve great personal satisfaction.

Being a mentor can improve your leadership skills and allow you to learn to adapt different perspectives.

Help make you more open to accept alternative ways of thinking and allow you to challenge yourself and at the same time get inspired.

A mentor does not necessarily need to be someone at the top of his or her profession.

Determine whether you are ready to become a mentor:
  • Willingness to help, to develop and achieve success in their career and life
  • Prepared to invest time and effort
  • Being a good listener and able to encourage others
  • Openness to new ideas and perspectives
  • Interested in challenging and helping someone to reach further
  • Willingness to share personal knowledge and experiences
  • Able to keep discussions confidential
  • Willingness to discuss personal matters as well as career dilemmas.

Few things to consider towards finding the right mentor
  1. Find a way to indulge and attract the attention of your mentor bearing in mind that:
    1. They are helping to achieve goals and making a difference in another person’s life
    2. You need to give occasional thank you or acknowledgement of the assistance they are providing
    3. There is a need to have an enjoyable relationship
  2. Invite and sustain mentor’s interest by:
    1. Knowing what you need and want from the relationship
    2. Having clear-defined objectives
    3. Identifying problems you believe might be obstacles
    4. Giving thought to and be able to articulate how you think a mentor can assist you
    5. Thinking about reaching your objectives
    6. Being purposeful and pleasant
    7. Having challenging goals
    8. treating the mentoring relationship with care
  3. take initiative to determine your own needs by:
    1. reviewing your last performance evaluation
    2. reading job description for position you aspire to hold
    3. listing 3 basic needs you have in the current position
    4. thinking what you currently enjoy in your current situation

Skills mentee will need to develop to make the most of your mentoring experience
  • asking the right questions
  • good listening skills
  • building trust

You have the right to express yourself, and the right to shape the path that the relationship and the mentoring process are taking

Find a way to address differences diplomatically and politely

Remember, both the mentor-mentee need to work hard, be open to new ideas and make the most of it while respecting your counterpart
