Bosses who persistently promote
performance and humanity devote considerable energy to reading and responding
to followers’ feelings and actions, and those of other key players like
supervisors, peers, and customers. Developing
and sustaining self-awareness ought to be at the top of the list for every boss. Every boss is prone to bouts of cluelessness
and forgetting how closely followers track every little thing they do.
As a leader, people are looking at
you in a way that you could not have imagined in other roles. The two acids tests for great bosses:
i. whether people want to work for the
boss and would enthusiastically choose to do so again
ii. best bosses are hypersensitive to how
others feel about them and the work their people do.
