Management: Walking The Dark Path Alone

‘Walking the dark path alone’ usually refers to management making tough decisions, uncertainty and may also involve navigating immense isolation.  This situation can actually build resilience and independent judgement, but it can also lead to severe burnt-out.  In a positive sense, to walk alone means you get to focus.

It feels like a‘dark path’ to leaders due to:

1. Loneliness of leadership - The higher in hierarchy, the fewer peers the leaders may have to confide in especially when dealing with confidential restructuring, layoffs, succession planning or organisational crises.

2. Burden of ultimate responsibility

3. Lack of visibility

In today’s environment, there’s so much distraction, thus trying to achieve great focus is almost impossible.  Walking alone is the power needed to be successful; to focus; to gain strongest vision.  Leaders need courage to walk alone.

Walking alone also means walking away from things that may hold you back.  But if ever there’s a time when ‘walking alone along a dark path’ does happen, these are the few helping factors that may help:

1. Have the right support system, resources and peers to lean on

2. Reaching out to mentors and peers

3. Build community connections

4. Utilise resources for information gathering

5. Professional peer support

6. Invest in wellness

Remember that whether in situations of navigating a leadership challenge or a difficult situation, nobody should ever have to walk the dark path alone.
