THE WONDER ON SMILING

SHARED FROM:
STARMETRO WEDNESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2013
SIGHTS & SOUNDS BY XANDRA OOI
SMILE AND THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU
Smiling is one of the most powerful tools we have to influence other people’s feelings.  This caused the plastic surgeons of South Korea to be busy with the latest facial-enhancing trend – smile surgery!  The Wall Street Journal reported that according to the surgeons, service-industry workers such as flights attendants and consultants frequent the clinics

These further cements the fact that smiling is one of the biggest assets anyone can have, so much so that people are willing to pay, and suffer in pain, for it.  While the act of smiling is not hard, the act of smiling all the time and at everybody might be tiresome and can sometimes be downright impossible.

Some people say:
  • You only smile when you’re happy
  • A smile has to be genuine and come from within

Human beings have the power to decide, the power to influence and the power to change.  The final step is taking action.  In may sound a tad ridiculous to suddenly be grinning when you’re feeling bad.  But smiling when upset is as effective.  Most of the time our actions convey our feelings.  It is useful to know that our actions can even affect and regulate other people’s feelings.

Smile is principle number two under ‘Making People Like You’ in Dale Carniegie’s How to Make Friends and Influence People.  His advice is, forc yourself to smile.  Act as if you were already happy.  That will tend to actually make you happy.

Smile for others because it means that you believe in your power to influence.  When we smile, we are translating our feeling of joy to others.  You must believe in your power to influence your own emotions from a negative to a positive one.  So, smile, even though and especially when you don’t feel like smiling.  Smile regardless of whether you’re the customer or the staff, the boss or the employee, the parents or the child.

When smiling, give in to the whole action of letting it light up your face.  Smile like your best friend is watching, until it shows in your eyes.  Smile like smiling is worth doing in like, give it your best shot.

WOMEN'S WORLD

SHARED FROM:
THE STAR FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 2013
WHY NOT BY DORAIRAJ NADASON
NO MAN, NO CRY!

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE.
A future with superior genes and women who get to choose the progeny they want.
It could be a scary thought for mankind;
the 'man' part of it, anyway.

Men are found to be 'going out of style'. Women has been reported getting more and more successful in their careers.  Ladies are moving quickly up the corporate ladder and have no time for guys who are falling behind.

Thus, women are now opting to have a child through sperm banks as they provide the best for women to choose from. Denmark-based Cryos, is the world's largest sperm bank which supplies the stuff to some 70 countries.  the highest genes demand are those that will bring forth a child with brown hair or brown eyes.

Things could get worse as:
  • they could learn to replicate the sperm cells
  • artificial insemination will just be absolutely artificial
  • women may just walk into some Babies 'R' Us outlet and walk away with want they want
  • women will probably choose baby girls so they can play house with the kids
  • then at some point the earth will be filled with only women
What will happen to the 'man'kind then?  Would there be fun?

WHY TEAM PERFORMANCE GO SOUR?

Shared from:
Why Teams Don’t Work
J. Richard Hackman

According to management gurus, teams markedly outperform individuals, and that self-managing (or self-regulating, or self-directed, or empowered) teams do best of all.  Teams bring more resources, and more diverse resources, to bear on a task than could any single performer.  Teams composed of people from different units can transcend traditional functional and organizational barriers and get members pulling together toward collective objectives.  Teams offer the potential for synergy.

Research evidence has found that teams usually do less well than the sum of their members’ individual contributions.  Teams can go sour when:

  • ·         clients are dissatisfied with a team’s work,
  • ·         members become frustrated and disillusioned
  • ·         team becomes ever weaker

Even if a team has clear, engaging direction and an enabling structure, its performance can go sour, or fall well below the group’s potential, if it has insufficient organizational support.  Teams often start out with great enthusiasm but then become disillusioned as they encounter frustration after frustration in trying to obtain the organizational supports they need to accomplish the work.

Mistakes that designers and leaders of work groups sometimes make:

  • 1.      Use a Team for Work That Is Better Done by Individuals
  • 2.      Call the Performing Unit a Team but Really Manage Members as Individuals
  • 3.      Fall Off the Authority Balance Beam
  • 4.      Dismantle Existing Organizational Structures So That Teams Will Be Fully “Empowered” to Accomplish the Work
  • 5.      Specify Challenging Team Objectives, but Skimp on Organizational Supports
  • 6.      Assume That Members Already Have All the Skills They Need to Work Well as a Team

Creating and launching real teams is not something that can be accomplished casually.

DENNIS INSPIRATION: 21. TEAM MAKES HARD JOB EASIER

Good people want to contribute to the success of their team.  Every executive say they do believes in teamwork.  But only a scarce few make teamwork a reality in their organizations.  Teamwork has been made as a core value in every other organization.  Many of today's leaders champion teamwork reflexively without really understanding what it entails.

Teamwork is an essential part of workplace success.  Every employer wants to look for people who can work well with others.  Teamwork involves building relationships and working with other people. Few important skills and habits building teams are:
•Working cooperatively
•Contributing ideas, suggestions, and effort
•Communication (both giving and receiving)
•Sense of responsibility
•Healthy respect for different opinions, customs, and individual preferences
•Able to participate in group decision-making

“It is amazing what can be accomplished when nobody cares about who gets the credit.”
- Robert Yates

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
- Helen Keller

Teams need strong team players to make any job easier.  A reliable team member will get the work done and does his fair share of work hard and meet commitments.  Consistency is the key.  To make a job easier, team needs members who can be counted on to deliver good performance all the time, not just some of the time.  They should also be active participants.  Team members who function as active participants are willing to take the initiative to help make things happen, and they always volunteer for assignments.

Good team players are willing to share information, knowledge, experience, and keep other team members informed.  Cooperation is the act of working with others and acting together to accomplish a job.  Despite differences, they respond to requests for assistance and take the initiative to offer help.  Team players care about their work, the team, and the team's work.  They show up every day with this care and commitment up front.  They want to give a good effort, and they want other team members to do the same.  This is what make any job easier.

Team players with commitment look beyond their own piece of the work and care about the team's overall work.  Problems are put out in the open for discussion.  They will collaborate with others to find solutions and form action plans.

Teamwork can be tough especially when it comes to dealing with different personalities and compromise is not necessarily easy
