Accountants are
now taking on more challenging roles. The
managerial roles they ascend to need to be urgently changed to leadership roles
in order to help the organization operate more effectively.
Leaders have
followers who follow them by choice, while managers are assigned subordinates
based on their roles and responsibilities.
Leadership is a relationship influence among leaders and followers who
reflect their shared purpose. Many managers
already possess the abilities and qualities needed to be a good leaders.
Both leadership
and management are essential in organizations.
Both need to be integrated effectively to lead to high performance.
The new
generation Y and Z value open communication, teamwork, and collaboration. They seek to understand their bosses and
peers perspective. They do not perform
well in controlled environment. They seek
a more holistic approach to life and career.
More time is spent building relationships rather than merely sitting to
complete tasks. They are also more
social, optimistic and has high expectations to excel with a focus on making a
difference.
Aside from
looking for more challenging and meaningful careers, they also expect to be led
by leaders rather than managers who merely emphasize on getting things
done. They value their personal and
family time. They also expect their
managers and leaders to be conscious of their working styles and needs. They will follow a leader who has good
interpersonal skills and who has a heart or empathy.
With this
recent development, employers are looking for accounting professionals with
leadership and excellent communication skills in order to grow more leaders
among the new generations.
