“S” guiding principles of healthy eating (safety values)

S Principles
Salt
·         dietary salt is necessary but can destroy
·         Sodium in salt makes the body retain water
·         Thereby swelling the blood volume
o   Could lead to rise in blood pressure and over loading of the heart or swelling of body tissues
·         Be cautious of salt intake

Sugar
·         careless intake of sugar can make a diabetic out of a healthy person
·         Train your taste buds
·         Remember, the taste of food in your mouth is only momentary but the cumulative effect may follow to the end of your road

Sweeteners
·         studies on sweeteners have shown association between some brands and the following diseases
o   Low blood sugar attacks
o   Leukaemia
o   tumours/abnormal growth
o   seizures/epilepsy
o   panic attack
o   headaches
o   mood changes
o   memory impairment
o   nervousness
o   depression
·         premature ageing has also been associated with the consumption of sweeteners

Spices
·         too much will have an adverse effect on the intestine
·         Some have also been found such as palpitations and sometimes    increased blood pressure

Stimulants
·         nicotine and caffeine have some effect on the heart and nerves
·         over stimulation is not healthy for the body, especially for hypertensive people

Self –control
·         the key to all
·         Avoid excesses
·         Adult do not always have to eat to fill the stomach
