Effective and efficient problem solving and decision-making
is a prerequisite for organizational performance and success. It can adversely affect sales, market share,
expenses, customer and employee satisfaction, profit and shareholder dividends.
Staff at all levels in an organization experience
work-related problems. . Some may be
quite minor (e.g. jamming of the photocopier) while others will be major (e.g. decision
to invest in new ventures at home or overseas).
Some problems may be technical (e.g. computer software bug) and others
may be people-related (e.g. inadequate communication between two departments). Regardless of the nature and the dimension, problems
should be identified and resolved.
People often rush head-long into trying to solve the issues without
fully appreciating the thinking process and techniques that could be used to
enhance problem solving and decision-making ability.
