DIVERSITY AND CULTURAL AWARENESS




Awareness about the diversity of people and the cultural breadth that prevails in teams or organizations is very important.  It can be built with an open-minded attitude and a willingness to accept that the journey towards greater enlightenment is valuable and worthwhile.  Individuals need to reflect on bringing about a climate that is welcoming and trusting of diversity of belief, opinion and action.
Awareness can be heightened by:
  • actively talking about diversity
  • focusing people’s minds on the strengths and the benefits diversity can bring
Changing people’s attitudes needs a lot of careful planning and commitment.  But we need to remember that we cannot change a person’s attitude.  We can only “reshape” behavior which may lead them to change.
