Yusuf
a.s. dreamt that he saw eleven stars with the sun and the moon prostrating
before him. His father, Prophet Ya’qub
knew that a great honor would one day be bestowed upon his beloved son. Yusuf a.s. has eleven brothers. Only Benjamin, his younger brother, was from
the same mother. Six of his elder
brothers were from two of his father’s slavers.
Prophet Ya’qub a.s. loved both Yusuf a.s. and Benjamin very much.
Yusuf’s
a.s. elder brothers were envious of their fathers’s greater love and affection
towards their two younger siblings. They
planned and conspired to do something evil against Yusuf a.s. Some of them even suggested that Yusuf a.s.
be killed or that he be banished to some faraway place.
The eldest
of the siblings, Jehovah, had some conscience and persuaded the others not to
kill Yusuf a.s. but to simply leave him at the bottom of the well. Ya’qub a.s. never left Yusuf a.s. alone with
his elder brothers. They persuaded him
to let Yusuf a.s. play with them and vowed their sincerity and ability to take
good care of him. The brothers insisted
until Ya’qub relented.
His elder
brothers verbally and physically abused him along the way and finally threw him
into a well. Yusuf’s a.s. brothers came to their father crying with the news
that the wolf had devoured him. Actually
they had slaughtered an ewe an dpoured its blood on his shirt. They came with Yusuf’s shirt spotted with
blood as an evidence of their claim.
Meanwhile,
a group of travellers came to the well with Yusuf a.s. in its depth. When one of them lowered down a bucket to
fetch some water, Yusuf a.s. who was then 12 years old, hung on to it. They were overjoyed to see such a handsome
child and planned to take him as a slave and sell him.
The caravan
got out of Madyan area and headed for Egypt.
The caravan of travellers quickly sold Yusuf a.s. for a cheap
price. The man who bought Yusuf a.s. was
Egypt’s minister of Finance who carried the grand tittle of Al-Aziz or the
Exalted One. Yusuf a.s. grew up in the
palace of the Minister of Finance and received good treatment like a son to his
master. He began gaining authority and
influence in the palace.
