People’s development almost
always is about training in a fairly structured manner where a group of people
are offered information on:
- Knowledge (such as what is emotional intelligence?, how to set up a well-structured budget, etc.)
- Developing a specific skill (such as how to listen more effectively or how to give a good presentation)
Coaching is an open-ended
process where an individual obtains expert input to achieve better long-term
performance and results. It may be given
by an internal or external expert who is experienced in broad-based management
terms and have a facilitation-led approach.
Coaching can also be performed by an internal organizational
mentor. He or she needs to be
- highly skilled at asking insightful questions and
- able to offer steering type guidance to the person being coached
As people’s needs and readiness
varies, training is often a poor choice.
