Communication is fundamental to
human. We communicate in a variety of
ways every day. We engaged in a wide
range of communication activities, such as speaking and hearing literally
thousands of words. We are constantly adjusting what we think and what we do as
a result of communication. According to
psychologist Robert Boltonm in his best-selling book, People Skills, although
mechanical means of communication have been developed beyond the wildest flight
of the imagination, people often find it difficult to communicate face-to-face.
Most “communication breakdowns” are
associated when something goes wrong with excuses like:
- “someone” “didn’t communicate well”
- things “weren’t made clear”
- “it wasn’t explained properly”
- not done “properly”
- fails to be “clear”
But “proper” and “clear” to one
person may be utterly ineffective to another.
The obligation therefore rests fully on each and every one of us to:
- communicate clearly according to the situation in which we find ourselves, and
- actively listen when people communicate with us.
