Leading Equals
Leadership is complex.  There are visionary leaders, empowering leaders, charismatic leaders, and values-based leaders.  Traditional leaders can usually rely on the legitimate power.  But when in charge of a team, the level of authority is often non-existent.
SKILLS NEEDED TO LEAD A MULTIFUNCTIONAL PEER GROUP
Master the Group Process
·        Learn to lead discussions
·        proactively manage different personalities
·        set a positive foundation for the team's interactions
o   Establish a relaxed environment
o   encouraged everyone to share opinions and ideas
o   Ask for input from everyone
o   encourage quieter members to speak up
o   Use active listening skills
o   Insist on respect for one another
o   consider developing a team charter to define your team's goals
o   Use participative decision making tools
o   ensure active involvement and commitment from the team
Empower Team Members
·        When leaders use their power to help others accomplish great things, people often want to work very hard for them
·        empower someone means trusting that person
·        When people feel trusted, they’ll want to take on more responsibility for the outcome
·        Empowerment is a great motivator
·        sometimes assigning a task or granting a level of authority can serve as a very effective reward
Be Flexible
·        Use discretion when enforcing rules and regulations
·        learn to adapt to the changing environment
Set Goals
·        goals are needed to point in the right direction and to evaluate performance
·        having a clear direction is more essential when working in a diverse set of people
·        easier to keep people working together effectively if objectives are clear
Support and Protect Your Team
·        Focus on these three key areas
o   Obtain resources
o   Manage stakeholders
o   Obtain management feedback

Leading a team of your peers is a definite challenge.
