Deming's Five Diseases of Management
The Five Diseases of Management by Dr W. Edwards Deming, are five principles, attitudes, and behaviors that can prevent an organization from being successful in the long term.

Deming's Five Diseases
No Consistent Purpose
·        organization frequently changes its strategy, management approach, or objectives
·        strategy, management approach, or objectives were not defined clearly
·        negatively affect employees
·        action:
o   start with Mission and Vision Statements; and values and driving purpose
o   ensure team members understand organization's strategy
o   emphasize the importance of self-discipline and stamina
o   must make sure that managers stay focused on meeting their objectives
Focus on Short-Term Profits
·        may cultivate a sense of fear in their people
·        they are likely to fail to innovate
·        action:
o   focused on long-term growth
o   question your intentions
o   Think carefully
"Managing by Fear"
·        causes people to focus on short-term performance at the expense of long-term success
·        actions:
o   Examine organization's current review process
o   make sure that people get feedback right away
o   implement coaching or mentoring programs
o   conduct performance reviews with honesty, empathy, and respect
High Senior Management Turnover
·        will never reach their full potential
·        there will always be key people who contribute little
·        team is never fully effective
·        problem of job dissatisfaction
·        effect on the staff turnover in the rest of the organization
·        action:
o   find out why people are leaving
o   Talk with team members to find out what is and isn't working
o   conduct exit interviews with staff who depart
o   build good work relationships
o   make sure that people's roles match their strengths and interests
o   ensure that you create the right pay structure
