WHAT
COLOR IS YOUR URINE?
Normal
urine is usually straw-colour yellow. It
is not cloudy. There are many causes of
cloudy or foamy urine. Sometimes it can
be due to mild dehydration which causes the body to conserve water and result
in more concentrated urine. Some common
causes of cloudy urine:

Urinary
Tract Infection (UTI)
o
Can
signify an infection in any or all parts of your urinary tract, from the
kidneys to the urinary bladder.
o
UTI
leads to production of pus, especially infections involving the kidneys and
bladder.
o
Urine
can also contain blood as the infectious organisms invade and destroy healthy
cells
o
Other
accompanying symptoms of UTI:
§
Burning
sensation during urination
§
Urinating
very frequently
§
Having
the urge to urinate frequently
§
Pain
in the flanks (kidneys)

Increased
levels of phosphate crystals
o
Cloudy
urine with foul smell.
o
This
condition is not harmful.
o
Usually
causes by excessive consumption of milk.
·
Dehydration
·
Abnormal
vaginal discharge (women)
o
Cab
be due to changes in ovulation cycle, female reproductive tract infections
·
Taking
too many vitamin supplements
·
Gonorrhoea
·
Presence
of protein
o
Many
causes including diabetes mellitus, hypertension during pregnancy, nephrotic
syndrome
·
Kidney
stones
·
Infectious
of the prostate
Red
or pink urine can be due to the presence of blood. This is called haematuria. The cause of this can also simply be what you
eat. Beets, blackberries and rhubarb can
cause red urine. Chronic lead or mercury poisoning can also turn urine red.
Orange
urine can be caused by rifampicin and certain other drugs, or it can be indicative
of bile duct problems. Some people have
dark color urine as a result of bilirubin.
Blue or green urine can be caused by ingesting certain food dyes and
medicines. There’s also a condition
called ‘blue diaper syndrome’ where children with families’ high calcium in
their blood have blue urine.
