DENNIS INSPIRATION: 9. DO YOUR BEST

Have you ever heard that doing the best there is at this moment will put you in the best place for the next moment.  In everything we do, we do the very best we can.  Never settle for anything less.  Doing our best work is an act of self-love.  People usually do their best at things they truly enjoy.  The act of self-love shows that we value our time and energy and thus we choose to invest that valuable time and energy in things that matter to us.
There are a few reason why you need to consider doing your best, the first is that, doing your best will result in excellence which in the long run has an accruing benefits attaching to it.  People will recognize you in ways that will invariably show up later in the way other regard and support you.  You will find that working will be more enjoyable because you apply your full self to it.  Thus, the thing that you care about becomes more enjoyable whilst the drudgery becomes more difficult because we drag our feet.  All you have to do is simply to build the habit of excellence and you’ll find all the ‘drudgery’ is less painful.
There are 6 techniques to do your best in work:
·         Decide why the work matters to you.  If you do not know why you are doing what you are doing; pause, stop and find out.  Something that matters will make you care; something that you care about will be enjoyable to do.
·         Get clear on what excellence looks like in each work you are doing.  Create a vision for you to work on.  Get input to create excellence.  Then do your level best to achieve excellence as you have vision it.
·         Focus on your strengths and get help with your weaknesses.  Remember the equation: ABILITY + EFFORT = OUTCOME.  In everything you work on, think of the outcome and impact.
·         Commit to excellence.  Don’t settle for less.  Bear in mind that excellence does not equal to perfection.  Excellence is a measurable standard, whereas perfection is an illusory standard.  Strive for excellence not perfection.
·         Reflect on why it was the best work ever done.  Achieving the best is an interactive process.
·         Affirm and celebrate your excellence.

We are at our very best and we are happiest
When we are fully engaged in work we enjoy
It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile
(Earl Nightingale)

Time is the greatest enemy there is.  It is life, because when you ran out of time you ran out of life.  Time can be measured, can be saved, but it can’t be seen, can’t be touched, and can’t be heard.  Nobody ever had enough time.  So do not waste precious time in doing a job you’ll know you can’t do well.  Focus on your strengths, beef-up on your weaknesses.  There are 10 simply rules which focused on philosophical and behavioral done by Richard Hamming in 1986:
1.      Drop your modesty
2.      Prepare your mind
3.      Age is important as wisdom often comes along with it
4.      Rains alone are not enough, you also need courage
5.      Make the best of your existing working conditions
6.      Work hard and effectively
7.      Believe and doubt your hypothesis at the same time.  Believe the theory enough to go ahead, doubt it enough to notice the errors and faults
8.      Work and focus on the important problems in your field
9.      Be committed to your problems
10. Leave your door open.  It may caused you to get all kinds of interruptions, but you will occasionally get clues as to what the world is and what might be important

Always bear in mind that the phrase ‘I did my best’ is the evil cousin of ‘at least I tried’ and the ugly step child of ‘I did everything I could’.
