OSTEOARTHRITIS

What is?
  • Slowly develops in the joints
  • Can affect any joints
    • Knees
    • Fingers
    • Hips
    • Spine (neck or lower back)
Symptoms?
  • Aches after physical work or exercise
  • Joint stiffness, especially when waking up in the morning or staying in one position for a long time

  • Knees: Difficulty walking down the steps, squatting, getting up from chair after a long period

  • Hips: Sometimes the pain is felt in the buttocks, inner thigh, groin or even knees.  May restrict movements in bending, so activities such as putting on jeans, skirts and shoes can pose a big challenge
  • Fingers: Develop after menopause.  Women are at greater risk because generally use the hands more than men.  Small bony knobs may appear on the end joints (closest to the nails) and on middle joints of the fingers.  Fingers can become enlarged and crooked, and will experience pain, stiffness and numbing.
