PROPHET
Lut a.s. was Prophet Ibrahim’s a.s nephew, the son of Ibrahim’s a.s. brother,
Haran. His father died when he was
young. He was brought up in the house of
Tarikh, Ibrahim’s father. When they
migrated away from Babylon, Ibrahim a.s. journeyed to Palestine ahile Lut a.s
travelled to the people of Al-Mu’tafikah.
They dwelled in an area named Sodom (Sadum).
Allah
s.w.t. had destined Lut a.s. to go there.
Sodom, then, was one evil city. Their
inhabitants used to waylay, rob, and killed some of the travellers who passed
by their area. The place was rife with
anarchy and all forms of sinful acts. They
would commit sinful acts unashamedly in the open so that others would witness
it. Their greatest evil was their men’s
desire for homosexual sex. The Sodom
people preferred men to women.
Prophet
Lut a.s. worked hard to convinced the people of Sodom to come back to a
righteous life obeying the teachings of Allah s.w.t. But they were deaf to Lut’s a.s. preaching. The Sodomites even threaten to drive him out
of the city.
For years
Lut a.s. tried to make his people change but to no avail. No one would response to his pleas except for
his daughters. His own wife was a
disbeliever. The years went on and still
Lut a.s. was no closer to success. Instead
they mocked him and arrogantly challenged him to bring Allah’s s.w.t. torment
upon them if he were indeed truthful.
Lut a.s.
turned to Allah s.w.t. for help and guidance.
In response to Lut’s a.s. prayers, Allah s.w.t. sent Angels down to
earth to meet Lut a.s. and destroy the people of Sodom.
Three
Angels were sent; Jibrail, Mikaail, and the angel of death. The three angels headed for Al-Mu’tafikah. The angels reached the edge of the village in
the afternoon. The first person to catch
sight of them was Lut’s a.s. daughter who was bringing water from outside the
village. The three angels asked her
where they could find somewhere to stay.
Wary
of her people’s preference for men, she told them to wait while she hurried to inform
her father. Lut a.s. suddenly felt very
distraught and he quickly ran to his guests.
He knew what would happen if the others saw these strangers. The angels asked Lut a.s. if he could put
them up for the night. Lut a.s. was
feeling troubled. Lut a.s. was destresses
because he knew that he might not be able to defend them from the atrocities of
the people of Sodom. When they persisted,
Lut a.s. requested them to wait until nightfall when no one would see them
before coming into town.
When
it became dark, Lut a.s. escorted his guests over to his house. As soon as Lut’a a.s. wife saw them, she
quietly sneaked out of the house to inform the others of the presence of these
strangers. News of Lut’s a.s. handsome
and outstanding-looking guests spread through the community like wildfire. People quickly rushed to Lut’s a.s. home with
great excitement.
When
Lut a.s. saw the mob approaching his house, he pleaded with them to leave his
guests alone. Lut a.s. was powerless to
stop this sex-craved mob. Lut a.s.
locked the door of his house. The people
were raring to attack the house and force entry from outside. When the angels saw him in such state of
helplessness and misery, they confronted him to not be anxious or
frightened. They then declared their
true identity as angels, and told Lut a.s. that his people will not be able to
harm him or his family who believed.
The evil
people wanted to attack the door but the angel Jibrail a.s. got out earlier and
stryck their faces wuth the edge of his wing.
They all became blind with that strike from Jibrail a.s. The misguided and arrogant people of Sodom
still would not feel ashamed or repent. They
proudly claimed that they were bewitched.
They returned to their homes feeling their way through like blind
people.
The angels
then warned Lut a.s. to leave his house before sunrise and to take his entire
family with him, except for his wife. As
the sun appeared, the torment came.
The angel
Jibrail a.s. scooped up the entire village with just one of his wings and lifted
the whole village high up to the sky and flung it back down to the earth. A storm of stones rained on the city and
everyone and everything in it were totally destroyed. No disbeliever escaped the punishment. Sodom was completely destroyed and it had left
remnants for the world to see and ponder upon, the area called the Dead Sea
today.
Lut a.s.
then took his family and went back to Ibrahim a.s.
