MISINTERPRETATION OF MANAGEMENT THEORY

Over the past few decades, the messages of management theory as follows have been remarkable:
  • A fair degree of democracy is desirable, both in policy making and in everyday work
  • There need to be a high degree of trust between management and workers
  • Open management is vital for trust; secrecy should be reserved for genuinely confidential matters
  • Boss need to be visible and know their staff as people
  • Workers who find satisfaction in their work, perform better
  • Mangers at all levels should listen to their staff – and listening means more than just hearing

But what is actually happening is different.  Some are being misinterpreted.
  • When the boss goes round staff, the tour is seen as inquisitorial rather than as an exercise in relationship
