ART OF CHORE TRAINING

Training children to do housework is especially important if you do not have a maid.  Start training the children from toddler-hood.  Chores assigned should be age appropriate.  Chore distribution among children must be undertaken with care.  In training children, do not expect perfection.  Accept flawed handiwork but encourage them to improve.  Give then a time frame to finish their task.

If their work is being criticized constantly, they may feel dis inclined to do it.  Praise them if they had done an excellent job.

Examples of training:
  1. Putting away the toys after finished playing.  You can even have a contest of who can put away the toys faster.  Enjoy the moment, as there will come a day when they are smart and let mummy and other siblings win the contest.  So, have different contest each time.
  2. Clearing the dishes after meals
  3. Weeding the garden
  4. Washing school shoes
  5. Folding clothes

Examples of rewards:
  1. A contest
  2. A reward chart and award them with stickers, and redeem the stickers for small gifts.  Be sure to state the number of stickers for the said gifts.
  3. Cash rewards for chores not in their list of regular chores like car washing.

Some parenting experts recommend that you don’t pay children for chores as these are responsibilities that they need to share as family.
