13. Talent review

Talent review in a simple form is all about succession planning, creating a leadership pipeline and making sure you have the right people in the right roles at the right times.  This includes:
-          Reviewing performance, aspirations and potentials.  Bear in mind that everyone has potential.  So, it’s all about finding the right paths for each individual.
-          Assessing readiness for progression and development needs
-          Identifying the people and the gaps
-          Making sure that all is done fairly, transparent and consistently

Formal appraisal is not just an opportunity to manage performance, but also the perfect time to:
-          Give positive feedback
-          Say thank you for a job well done
-          Show gratitude for discretionary effort
-          Help people fulfill their contribution
-          Discuss development
-          Harness ideas and feedback
-          Plan for the future
-          Help clarify the way forward
-          Re-motivate, re-invigorate, and inspire

Part of the challenge is that people aren’t managing performance and other issues as they go along.  Growing the whole person and not just developing them to deliver the needs of the business.  To grow people, you need to understand them, and treat each one as an individual.

The three (3) important things are
1.         Make regular appraisals and ongoing reviews part of your DNA, putting the     work in to enable really rich one-to-one discussions.
2.         Make appraisals a positive event, enabling people to drive their own progress
3.         Use a great system to plan for the future
