8. Welcome in a big way: Making the most of
induction
Induction
is where a new team member is helped to settle into their new organization and
their role. It plays a very important
role in engaging and retaining the employee.
The induction is a great opportunity to gain engagement and instill a
sense of belonging, loyalty and understanding as well as setting the foundation
for a successful career and optimal performance.
Inductions
should be well planned and written into a proper schedule and
communicated. It’s also important to
remember that people can’t take in vast amounts of information. Things to include in induction:
Where
stuff is
-
Layout of
building, toilets and other facilities
-
Culture
-
Meeting
people
-
Legal
stuff
-
Company
strategy and goals
-
A bit about
company history and key facts
-
Job description
-
Development
-
Visits
-
Team-building
activities
-
Project
-
Psychometric

The idea
is to coach rather than doing lots of ‘telling’.
The three
(3) things to in induction do are :
1. Starts as you mean to go on. Set the scene and clarify expectations on
both sides
2. Involve all relevant people in the
induction process and make the welcome a big one
3. Build in reviews throughout and make
sure they happen
