Study: Women Drivers are angrier Than Men
Reports by: Yuen Meikeng, Joseph Kaos Jr and Jane Tan

A five-year study undertaken by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) had revealed that Malaysian women drivers have been found to be angrier than men behind the wheel.  However, despite that, women drivers suffered fewer crashes and road fatalities.  The survey was to identify the numbers of agitated drivers’ categories by anger drivers, medium-anger drivers and low-anger drivers.

The study was conducted between 2009 and 2012, measured the anger levels of 5,248 drivers (accept motorcycles) in more than 103 districts throughout the country.  The survey was meant to:
  • Help Malaysians drivers be more aware about the dangers of driving in an angry state and why they should always keep their cool while on the road
  • As an aid to traffic police so that they could conduct more efficient enforcement in the states with large numbers of high-anger drivers.
The drivers in the survey were asked to rate how angry they felt on a scale of 1 – 5 on matters ranging from illegal driving to hostile gestures.
Angry drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicles, suffer loss of concentration and display verbal, physical or vehicular aggression on the road.  The main causes of fury were found to be:
·         Discourtesy
o   Cutting cues
o   Refusing to give way
o   Failing to use indicators before turning of changing lanes
o   Triple parking on roadsides
·         Traffic obstruction
o   Construction or repair works
·         Rude or hostile gesture
·         Driving too slowly
·         Getting stopped by the police

Malaysians are normally polite people, but when it comes to driving, they seem to get easily agitated.  This is because most of them are usually rushing for time, so people they tend to get frustrated when the road is congested.  There are more angrier drivers here compared to other places mainly due to the fast pace of life and traffic congestion in the city.

According to Consultant Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Mohamad Hussain Habil, anger is like a curtain to your rational mind.  Anger disorders affect people who unable to cope properly when they lose their cool.  They tend to be oversensitive.  According to Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Ting Joe Hang, the anger arises because of the many roles where sometimes people have difficulty juggling everything which will cause them to experience more stress.

There is the opinion where Malaysian drivers have two things on their mind when it comes to driving:
  • It is always me first
  • Accidents won’t happen to me
