1. LOYALTY: VALUE TO BE VALUED

THE “DARK” SIDE OF LEADERSHIP AND WORKPLACE OUTCOMES
1.         LOYALTY: VALUE TO BE VALUED

There is so little loyalty amongst the workers in today’s world.  Few employees are loyal.  Those who are often do not know how to show it.  Every boss values loyalty. Some bosses even value it more than performance.

Showing loyalty
        Prepare to recognize loyalty situations
o   three major categories
§  when others are working against the boss whether deliberately or not, by
·         trying to make the boss look bad;
·         performing poorly, or failing;
·         opposing the boss's plans/ideas/decisions;
·         being ineffective when implementing plans; or
·         causing disgruntlement by talking behind the boss's back.
§  when situations are working against the boss, and
§  when bosses are working against themselves.
·         making poor hiring decisions or making a bad decision and then complicating it by sticking to it rather than admitting a mistake and abandoning it
        Identify a loyalty situation
        Decide whether to show loyalty
o   identify the consequences to your boss of showing loyalty
o   looking at the consequences to you
o   evaluate the consequences
o   make the decision
        Prepare to show loyalty
        Show loyalty to your boss
o   Keep your boss informed of anything
        Accept thanks from your boss.

Showing loyalty is one of the basic unwritten requirements.
