Ten important DON'Ts for a subordinate

Ten important things a subordinate should avoid:
  • Don't sit still for being half informed about your assignments.  If you aren't clear on what is expected in the job, press for complete answers up front.
  • Don’t go beyond your authority without pressing reasons.
  • Don't be too brash, cocky, clubby or, too shy and deferential.
  • Don't waste any time rewarding your friends or punishing your enemies in company time and with company resources.
  • Avoid pressing your own favourite personal or social crusade which is unrelated to the purposes of the job in company time.
  • Don't jump outside the existing channels.
  • Don't keep quiet about genuine wrongdoing simply to follow orders of an immediate superior.  If there is lawbreaking, blow the whistle.
  • Don't conceal bad news or gloss over a bad result by fudging figures or facts.
  • Don't ever enter into fights or vendettas on the job.
  • Don't bluff. Never aim a gun unless you are willing and able to pull the trigger.
