The higher you are up the
hierarchy the more people you can demotivate, directly and indirectly. In truth there are endless ways of
demotivating people including
1. Ignoring staff as completely as possible
2. Forgetting, or not to know, staff's names
3. Responding
to any idea or suggestion with comment, uttered in as offhand and down putting
a way as possible
4. Acting
upon one of staff good idea and claims all the credit for yourself
5. Always
claiming credit for everything successful done by staff
6. Blaming staff
for every weakness or failure of your own
7. Distancing
from bad things which happen in your area of responsibility
8. Showing a
complete lack of interest in the person as a person
9. Being insensitive
10. Criticizing
should be frequent and hard-hitting
11. Telling
staff off in front of others
12. Confusing the
staff by giving conflicting orders
13. Giving
unclear or ambiguous instructions
14. Inconsistent behavior
15. Treating
staff with courtesy and consideration but patronizing them as if they were
small children
16. Unclear
job descriptions and unclear reporting lines
17. Exclusion
of staff from real involvement
18. Being cynic
and bitter
Are you that jerk? Remember that there are dangers in
demotivating staff.
